Iron Man
by Ramin Djawadi
Opens: May 2, 2008
It seemed
a shoe-in that JOHN DEBNEY would
be the composer for JON
FAVREAU's foray into the
big-screen version of IRON MAN.
But alas ... quite a few were taken
aback when it was announced that
Remote Controller, RAMIN DJAWADI
would hold the musical reigns.
It's been commented that HANS
ZIMMER will be looking over
DJAWADI's shoulder on this.
No pressure or anything.
This could be a breakout score
for DJAWADI. Expectations
are skyrocketing on this movie and
I've only lowered my
anticipation level a little with
the announcement of DJAWADI over
DEBNEY. This SHOULD be
quite an experience for both
eyes and ears.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull
by John Williams
Opens: May 22, 2008
Indy is
back! Spielberg is Back!
John Williams is back!
After a billion screenplay
rewritings and revisions, the
fourth installment of the
Indiana Jones series swings into
to theaters in May. It's
been a long time since we've
seen Indy and his whip and it's
been a long time since WILLIAMS
has written a score for a movie
like this. WILLIAMS
certainly doesn't write the type
of music he did when we first
saw Dr. Jones running from
boulders, breaking through walls,
and sliding under trucks.
It will be a pleasure to hear
the old Indy theme again, but
unfortunately, we should expect
something more along the lines
of STAR WARS: EPISODE 3 -
REVENGE OF THE SITH than
INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST
CRUSADE.

Speed Racer
by Michael Giacchino
Opens: May 9, 2008
When I
first heard that THE WACHOWSKI
BROTHERS were taking my
childhood idol, SPEED RACER, I
thought, "Better them than
someone else." I then saw
the cast and the trailer and
I'm still recuperating.
It looks as though they have
brought SPEED RACER into the
world of GUITAR HERO, ROCK BAND,
and DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION.
The look of the film could
hardly be more unfaithful to the
original. Yes...all this
is based on the trailer, but
could the final product really be
that much different? Maybe
a saving grace is knowing that
MICHAEL GIACCHINO is on board
for the score...although I have
to think there will be a litany
of contemporary pop songs
littering the screen and
eventual soundtrack. I'm
not sure even Giacchino's talent
can overcome what awaits us on
the screen.

The Chronicles of Narnia:
Prince Caspian
by Harry Gregson-Williams
Opens: May 16, 2008
Harry
Gregson-Williams avoided all
comparisons for his work for THE
LION, THE WITCH, AND THE
WARDROBE and the reigning
fantasy score THE LORD OF THE
RINGS. The
expectations were sure there,
but his score, as solid as it
was, couldn't compare in depth
and detail. The movie
itself was a little flat and
light on the action but its said
that PRINCE CASPIAN has
rectified that issue. With
new characters introduced
hopefully we'll see some of that
depth creep into the score.
